Fangcun Town in Daiyue District, Tai'an City, Shandong Province derives its name from a historical episode related to defensive self-protection. Due to its strategic location adjacent to abundant water sources and dense forests, the area was inhabited as early as the Spring and Autumn Period by residents seeking settlement.
Fangcun Village is situated south of Culai Mountain, north of the Chaiwen River, and east of the Mouwen River. With distinct seasons and ample sunlight, it boasts unique natural conditions ideal for agriculture. In the second year of the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty, to escape warfare and banditry, displaced people settled along the Wen River. Over time, the population grew, they constructed earthen walls, planted trees, erected fences, and built simple defensive structures, naming the village"Fangcun" meaning"defensive village," symbolizing protection against wild animals and thieves while safeguarding local peace. These measures not only ensured the safety of villagers'lives and property but also strengthened the village's cohesion and unity.
Over time, Fangcun gradually grew and developed into a thriving village with a robust population and a prosperous economy. During the Shunzhi era of the Qing Dynasty, due to the similar pronunciation between"fang" (defensive) and"fang" (house), the character"fang" was replaced by"fang," giving rise to its current name, Fangcun. The western part of Fangcun is known as Xifangcun, while the southern part is called Nanzhuangzi, also referred to as Xinminzhuang, Fobaozhuang, or Fenghuangzhuang. In 1984, the Fangcun Office was established with Fangcun as its administrative center, it was upgraded to Fangcun Township in 1985 and further reorganized into Fangcun Town in 1994, becoming an important town under the jurisdiction of Daiyue District, Tai'an City. Today, Fangcun Town has evolved into a modern urban center with a long history, rich cultural heritage, and a thriving economy, and its name stands as the best testament to this historical journey.
