Start of Autumn is the 13th solar term among the 24 Solar Terms.
It also marks the beginning of autumn.
It generally falls between August 7th and 9th of the Gregorian calendar every year.
The character"Li" means commencement
the character"Qiu" refers to ripe grains.
Ancient Chinese believed that from this time on, all living things
shift from luxuriant growth
to restrained ripeness.
Many people mistakenly think temperatures will drop sharply right after Start of Autumn,
yet this is not the case.
Start of Autumn still comes in the final phase of the three fu periods of intense heat,
and summer heat has not faded away completely.
The folkly known"Autumn Tiger"
brings a stretch of persistent sunny sweltering weather.
The temperature gap between day and night widens gradually.
Days remain muggy and hot,
while a faint cool autumn breeze can be felt in the morning and evening.
The ancients divided Start of Autumn into three pentads:
The first pentad sees cool winds arrive.
Northerly winds spring up little by little,
chasing away the swelter of summer.
The second pentad witnesses white dews form.
The temperature difference between day and night condenses water vapor,
forming crystal clear dewdrops on plants at dawn.
The third pentad hears cold cicadas chirp.
The cicadas’chirps turn plaintive,
heralding the end of midsummer.
As seasons cycle onward,
yang energy gradually recedes,
and yin energy grows steadily.
Start of Autumn stands as the dividing line between lingering summer heat and refreshing coolness,
as well as the starting point of accumulation and harvest.
Cast off the restlessness of summer,
nurture body and mind in line with seasonal rhythms,
and amid the gradually cooling autumn winds,
wait quietly for all things to ripen,
and embrace peace and good fortune.
