是盛夏正式拉开帷幕的分界
marks the official start of full summer
这一日太阳直射北回归线
On this day， the sun shines directly over the Tropic of Cancer
北半球迎来全年
and the Northern Hemisphere sees
最长白昼最短黑夜
its longest days and shortest nights of the year
日光铺洒大地
Sunlight spills over the earth
世间草木尽数舒展
All the grass and trees in the world are in full bloom
万物蓬勃到极致
and every living thing flourishes to the utmost
夏至过后气温持续走高
Temperatures keep climbing after the Summer Solstice
午后雷雨频繁
with frequent thunderstorms in the afternoons
闷热难熬的伏天
The sweltering dog days
也在不远的地方等候
are just around the corner
古人将夏至分为三候
Ancients divided the Summer Solstice into three pentads：
一候鹿角解
First pentad： Deer shed their antlers
二候蝉始鸣
Second pentad： Cicadas begin to chirp
三候半夏生
Third pentad： Pinellia tubers sprout
蝉鸣荷花
Cicada songs， lotus blooms
晚风、流云
night winds and drifting clouds
