[The mighty Yellow River surges forward ceaselessly. Several years ago, on the north bank of the Yellow River, Huang Zhaoquan, a teacher from the post-85s generation, led over 200"Yellow River Kids" in using hot irons to etch stories of the Yellow River. This was also the origin of the"Spring City Intangible Heritage Kid" IP image. Today, he is leading a new group of"Gourd Kids," reigniting the popularity of intangible cultural heritage pyrography at a new campus on the south bank of the Yellow River.
Every Monday afternoon, Huang Zhaoquan's pyrography classroom is crowded with"little artists." ]
Huang Zhaoquan:The moment I first held the pyrography pen, I was deeply enchanted by this"fiery ink painting"! In 2018, I was fortunate to become a student under Ms. Li Qingfen, the inheritor of Jinan pyrography, and began systematic learning. This art of fire and wood possesses both the expressive freehand brushwork and blank space of Chinese painting, as well as the delicate layering of Western painting, making it truly unique.
The pyrography pen is not just a tool; it has become a medium for children to dialogue with their hometown, life, nature, and tradition. When children etch images of the Yellow River, Five-Dragon Pool, lotus flowers onto gourds, rice paper, bamboo tubes, bamboo strips, wood panels, and furniture, intangible cultural heritage is no longer just"heritage" in textbooks, but a vibrant cultural heartbeat pulsating in the hands of youth.
[The school once launched a distinctive"Gourd Cultivation Project." From sowing seeds in spring to harvesting and polishing in autumn, each gourd was personally nurtured by the students. The school's gourd plantation and highly popular club classes have provided a more solid ground for inheritance. ]
Huang Zhaoquan:"I have always believed that the influence of pyrography skills on children is essentially a process of transforming intangible cultural heritage inheritance into a form of'emotional education' and'cultural identity.' Intangible cultural heritage should not be locked away in an ivory tower; it should take root, sprout, and blossom in the soil of the new era. I will continue to'play with fire' with the children, ensuring that the thousand-year-old art of pyrography continues to brim with vitality along the banks of the Yellow River!"
