Her name is Gao Guiying, an inheritor of dough figurine-making, an intangible cultural heritage, from the old alleys of Jinan. Born in the 1950s, her hands have kneaded a lifetime of dedication, molding not just dough but also profound human warmth.
When asked how she had mastered her craft, she smoothed her graying temples and replied,"Back then, I practiced the petals of a rose 3,000 times alone."
However, Gao's hands do more than shape dough figurines - they've also shaped destinies. During the wave of layoffs in the 1990s, she set up a dough figurine stand in her community. For 30 unbroken years, she provided free food, shelter and training, empowering about 6,000 apprentices to spread their dough figurine artistry far and wide. Among them, some became cultural heritage inheritors; others opened their own studios.
Retirement didn't slow her down. By the springs, she established a"Kindness Station," advising her apprentices:"Dough figurine art demands patience - steady heart, steady hands."
For apprentices facing dire straits, she dipped into her earnings from odd jobs, dough figurine sales and pension to offer both financial aid and spiritual encouragement:"Child, knead your hardships into the dough - we'll rise anew."
For Gao Guiying, money may come and go, but true craftsmanship endures forever. She splits her figurine proceeds twofold: one portion serves as the"startup funds" of her students, while the other flows to under-resourced mountain schools. Nearly two million yuan in donations have pooled like streams to the sea, yet she still dwells in her modest home in the old alley.
Dough figurines convey the warmth of human bonds, and craftsmanship builds dreams. Under her fingers, Sun Wukong rides clouds, and peony petals unfurl layer by layer. But her most moving creation remains the warmth of humanity itself - a silent, boundless love molded over half a lifetime. (Source: Tianqiao District Convergence Media Center, Jinan)
