Wuying Mountain, as the name suggests, has no shadow can be seen under the sun due to its gentle slope. The name first appeared in Local Record of Licheng County in 1928, which recorded that Wuying Mountain was located"in the northwest of Huangjiatun, four kilometers northwest of the county". It is approximately the area around Wuyingshan Road now.
Legend has it that the mountain was once called Juying Mountain, which was so huge that it blocked the sunlight and roads, bringing great inconvenience to the lives of nearby villagers. A Cui family led their descendants to cut a way through the mountain, and determined to level it to benefit the village. Erlang God was moved by the family's perseverance and helped them carry away the mountain. The Jinan's version of"The Foolish Old Man Who Moved the Mountains" has turned Juying Mountain into Wuying Mountain.
It is also called"Jinjiling" because of the legend that a Golden Rooster (Jinji) was dug up on the mountain. Whether the legend is true or not, a collection of painted pottery figurines of musicians, dancers and acrobats were indeed unearthed at the northern foot of Wuying Mountain in 1969, which filled the blank of the three-dimensional image of acrobatics in the Western Han Dynasty. At the same time, the Painted Pottery Turtledove Bearing with Pots of the Western Han Dynasty was also unearthed, which may be the origin of the Golden Rooster. These are all national treasures.
"Renowned is a mountain not for its height but for the immortal who lives in it. Ensouled is a sea not for its depth but for the dragon that inhabits it." Wuying Mountain was once rich in black sandstone, with springs gushing out to form a pool called"Wuying Pool". The water in the pool is clear and never dries up all year round, with fish playing and lotus flowers blooming. The bottom of the pool are rugged and shadowy, like a tortoise moving slowly or a dragon lurking beneath. The pool is surrounded by reeds, bluestones, green vines and lush trees. It is a good place for enjoying the quietness and entertainment in the bustling city. In 2004, Wuying Pool was listed as one of the"New Seventy-two Famous Springs of Jinan".
